Cuando uno piensa en Yucatán le viene a la cabeza la cultura Maya y sus grandes edificaciones, la amplia gastronomía, el colorido de sus trajes típicos y lo hermoso de sus bailables, pero también viene a la mente la Hamaca. Este artefacto que es el producto máximo de nuestros artesanos, del cual muchos piensan tiene un origen Maya por lo arraigado en nuestras costumbres.
La palabra Hamaca es de origen Haitiano y significa árbol, quizás se deba a que desde un principio uno de los lugares preferidos para colgarlas es entre dos árboles para aprovechar la sombra y el fresco que estos producen.
Hay quien cree también que la Hamaca es de origen polinesio.
Sin embargo, no se sabe a ciencia cierta si la Hamaca fue traída o inventada también en Yucatán, lo que sí ha sido posible determinar es que existen libros del siglo XVI que hacen referencia de estos objetos.
Lo cierto es que lo que propició que este artículo se arraigue en la vida de los peninsulares es una de las características de esta tierra del Mayab, un prácticamente verano sin fin que afectaba tanto a los colonizadores como a los indígenas con el intenso calor húmedo de la región.
Hammocks from Yucatan, Short History.
When one thinks about the Yucatan, what comes to mind are the pyramids, the delicious foods, the bright colors of the typical clothing and the beauty of the typical dances. What we also think about is the Hammock, which is produced by local craftsman.
Many think that the history of the hammock goes back to the early Mayas, but word hammock is of Haitian origin and means tree. Perhaps it is called that because often the hammock is used between trees to take advantage of the shade and cool breezes. Some believe that the hammock is Polynesian; however, it is not really known if the Hammock originated in the Yucatan or was brought there. Books from the XVI centenary make reference to the hammock.
In a land with endless summer with hot humid air, the hammock is part of everyday life for the Mayan people.
